Dobyns-Bennett's Foreign Language Graduation Requirements

Both Dual and University Path diplomas require two levels of the same foreign language.  It is recommended that Level I and Level II of any foreign language be taken in consecutive semesters, if possible.  For example, a student might take Level I and Level II in the same school year, or Level I during the spring semester (if offered) and Level II, fall semester (if offered).  Due to scheduling restrictions and student enrollment, every level cannot be offered every semester.

Exemption Policy

If a student wishes to be exempt from one or more levels of a foreign language prior to entering Dobyns-Bennett, he/she must achieve minimum master (c) on the Level I exam for that language.  Upon passing the Level I exam, the student may attempt to achieve mastery on the exam for the next level.  Tested areas of mastery in the modern languages include:  oral, listening, and writing communication; reading comprehension; and vocabulary and grammatical usage; mastery in Latin includes:  translation proficiency, grammatical usage, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.  Students earn no credit for exempted courses.  Credit is given only for courses taken at Dobyns-Bennett.

College Requirements

State supported Universities in Tennessee require successful completion in high school of two levels of one foreign language.

Once in college two additional years of foreign language courses (12 credit hours) are required by many universities for most majors.   Many of the these courses (except Latin), even the beginning level courses,  are taught in the target language.  Therefore, it may be advantageous to be at least moderately familiar with the foreign language chosen for college study.
