Course Information:
·
Students have a “Grading Practices Policy” which gives detailed
information about grading policies, course content, and assessment.
It should be at the front of their notebook.
·
Homework is listed on the “Homework Board” each day and on the Latin
web page. There is a strong
correlation between students who do their homework and those who master
curriculum content. All students
begin each six weeks with a 100 for a homework grade and 5 points are deducted
each time they do not have any of the assignment.
Partial points are given for partially completing homework.
This homework grade is weighted 1.0 when averaging the final six weeks
grade.
·
If your son or daughter forgets to bring their text home, and they need
it to do homework or study for a test, they can access the text on line.
Go to the Latin home page (see URL address above) and click on the Latin
for Americans hyperlink. The
user name is LAT12003and the password is jeth5feb.
·
Quizzes and tests are listed on the “Test Board” and the Latin web
page a few days in advance of the test or quiz.
·
Make-up and re-tests may be made up
Monday-Thursday as long as I do not have a meeting.
·
Students take a practice and then a final test during class time on all
grammar, syntax, and vocabulary content areas.
If they make an A on the practice test, they do not have to take the
final. For translation tests,
students take the first test in class and an optional re-test after school.
·
Tutoring is available free of charge every Wednesday from Mrs. Hickman.
If a conflict exists for the student, I will try to accommodate his/her
schedule.
·
Any performance, product-based assignment, or project is assessed with a
rubric, which describes and clarifies the criteria, which have to be achieved
in order to produce excellent work. All
rubrics are discussed in advance with students. Students often have input into the creation of the rubric.
·
Grade averages are distributed weekly as soon as there are enough
grades to average.
Supplemental Activities:
·
Membership in the Junior Classical League (the Latin Club) is open
to all past and present Latin students. Dues
are $8.00 and enable the student to attend the state JCL convention.
This year the convention has tentatively been scheduled in Clarksville,
Tennessee at Austin Peay, April 17-18, 2008.
Approximately 1000 Latin students from all over Tennessee compete in
academic, creative arts, and athletic competitions.
Encourage your son or daughter to participate and catch the Latin
spirit!!
·
Students may sell Sally Foster Gift Wrap or Entertainment
Coupon Books to help fund club activities and offset the cost of attending
the state convention. Packets
will be given to students wanting to participate next week. Order forms are due Thursday, September 28, 2006.
·
Latin Day at University of Tennessee is Tuesday, November 13th.
Numerous Roman history/life seminars are given by UT professors.
Details to follow. Any
Latin student may attend; registration is $20.
·
The National Latin Exam is given each March during the school day.
The $4 per student cost is paid from JCL fund-raising profits.
When students take this 45-minute exam, they have the opportunity to
earn a national award.
·
Salvation Army Christmas Angel Project. Every
year students choose two "Angels" (one teen boy and one girl) from
the Salvation Army Christmas tree. We
contribute money to buy these two teens Christmas gifts.
Everyone help wrap the gifts at our Christmas party.
